Since 2013, Fortuna has had the pleasure of partnering with Bayardo's farm in Matagalpa. Finca San Jose de las Nubes is nestled in the cloud forest of the Matagalpa region in Nicaragua. The 150-acre coffee farm owned by Bayardo’s family is situated at an elevation of 1,250 meters above sea level, an ideal microclimate for cultivating specialty grade coffee. Bayardo was raised on a coffee farm in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. The farm he grew up on with his grandfather in the 1920’s is not the same as the one he cultivates today. During a tumultuous political period in Nicaragua’s history, the Sandinistas took over farming land. After his mother sent him away for his safety, Bayardo returned to his home country in 1991 to purchase land and bring back his family history of coffee farming. Bayardo’s family has continued to prioritize quality in coffee as well as the surrounding community’s way of life. Focusing on creating a dedicated learning space powered by renewable energy sources has nurtured education for the local children and for the workers. Five days a week workers can attend classes to improve literacy among other things but also exposure to a diverse range of pursuits. The knowledge brimming in this community guides everyone to a much hopeful brighter future.
